Celebrating 75 Years of Soapmaking

Dr. Bronner’s will commemorate its 75th anniversary at its booth, including opportunities for attendees to record audio stories of their experiences and memories of encounters with Emanuel Bronner himself, and other members of the Bronner family, via a red rotary telephone—just like the phone Dr. Bronner used to speak to customers who called his phone number, which was printed on the original soap label. The company will also give away commemorative swag, including the limited-edition LP Sisters & Brothers: Original Recordings of E.H. Bronner, Moral ABCs, 75th anniversary t-shirts; and a lucky grand-prize winner will be selected for a trip to visit the headquarters of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps in Vista, CA.

Since its founding, Dr. Bronner’s has modeled mission-driven business practices to help make a better world. Striving to produce the highest quality products—including its world-renowned soaps and ethical chocolate, the brand’s business practices are rooted in a vision of social equity. The company caps executive compensation at five times the lowest paid fully vested position, and all profit not needed for operations or development is dedicated to organizations, campaigns, and people working for progressive social and environmental change.

Dr. Bronner’s continues to be run by the Bronner family, now 5th generation soapmakers as the Bronner family began making soap in Laupheim, Germany 165 years ago, starting in 1858. Under the leadership of David Bronner, CEO and Michael Bronner, President—both grandsons of founder Emanuel Bronner—the company has grown from earning $4 million in annual revenue in 1998 to $190 million in 2020. Over the last 20 years, the company has contributed nearly $100 million to activism and charity and has fought to raise the minimum wage; reform the nation’s devastating drug policy; integrate psychedelic therapy to heal hearts and minds; protect farmed animals and ocean wildlife; and expose and transform industrial agriculture to a model that is regenerative organic and fair; among other efforts.

Announcing New Packaging Innovations – Refill! Refill!

As part of its effort to reduce plastic use Dr. Bronner’s will also debut new packaging innovations at Expo West, including new soap refill cartons and a bulk refill pilot program. The company will debut its soap refill carton on drbronner.com in July 2023, and through a limited retailer pilot in July 2023, with a national retail launch planned for Spring 2024. Dr. Bronner’s bulk refill program is truly packaging free and circular, through utilizing local bulk distributors who receive full drums of soap and send them back empty to Dr. Bronner’s to refill, and in turn fill and stock full pails in retail stores and pick up empties to refill.  This addresses the hidden disposal of 5 gallon pails in most bulk liquid dispensing, which generally contain as much plastic as 40 quarts of soap.  The plastic bottles Dr. Bronner’s uses to package its liquid soap line are made from post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic, a practice Dr. Bronner’s helped pioneer more than fifteen years ago—in fact, the company was among the first American companies to package liquid soaps in 100% PCR plastic bottles. The brand’s latest packaging innovations will build on this legacy.

New Flavor of Magic All-One Chocolate—Cool Peppermint Cream

Dr. Bronner’s will showcase its newest chocolate flavor, Cool Peppermint Cream.  Dr. Bronner’s delicious, organic, fair trade, and vegan Magic All-One Chocolate pairs organic peppermint with 70% dark chocolate and is sweetened with lower-glycemic coconut sugar. The latest offering—Cool Peppermint Cream—delivers a lively, lightly sweet mint taste alongside a decadent cocoa experience featuring a unique blend of cocoa from Ghana and Ivory Coast, coconut sugar from Indonesia, cocoa butter from Congo, and bourbon vanilla from Madagascar.

Dr. Bronner’s Cool Peppermint Cream Magic All-One Chocolate flavor was created to honor the company’s legacy of peppermint products and its socially and environmentally responsible supply chain. All of Dr. Bronner’s chocolate, now available in seven flavors, is made from cocoa beans grown using regenerative organic farming practices that have lasting positive impacts on farmers, their communities, and the land. Dr. Bronner’s Magic All-One Chocolate was created to address and model solutions to the ecological and social harm prevalent in the conventional chocolate industry. For more information, see Dr. Bronner’s Cool Peppermint Cream  press release.

The company will offer samples of chocolate throughout the show, at its main booth #2637 in Hall C, and booth S25 in the ACC Main Lobby, including its original flavors: Roasted Whole Hazelnuts; Crunchy Hazelnut Butter; Salted Whole Almonds; Salted Almond Butter; Salted Dark Chocolate; and Smooth Coconut Praline.

Forthcoming Book from Lisa Bronner: Soap & Soul

Granddaughter of Emanuel Bronner, and author of the blog Going Green, Lisa Bronner will announce her first book, Soap & Soul: A Practical Guide to Minding Your Body, Your Home, and Your Spirit with Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps to be published in October of 2023 by Countryman Press. Part green-it-yourself handbook and part memoir, Soap & Soul provides readers with usage and dilutions for Dr. Bronner’s versatile products; and Lisa shares the ups and downs of her own green journey and Bronner family memories from her life in the family business that has been at the forefront of the natural marketplace for 75 years. Information about pre-sale and wholesale opportunities for Soap & Soul will be available at the Dr. Bronner’s booth throughout the show.
