Dr. Bronner’s was founded in the U.S. by Emanuel Bronner who, after losing his parents in the Holocaust, promoted a message of love and unity. In what he would call the “Moral ABC,” Emanuel urged us to realize our unity across religious & ethnic divides or perish: “We are All-One or None!” For Dr. Bronner, the tragic consequences of division were all too real.
Our American workforce here in North County San Diego is predominantly of Mexican ancestry—many are proud immigrants, just as Emanuel Bronner was. As a family and company comprised of immigrants, we are especially troubled by the treatment of immigrants at the U.S. border, especially children and young people, fleeing the humanitarian crisis in Latin America. Separating children from their parents and criminalizing refugees and asylum seekers is immoral and does not reflect our values nor the principles our business is based on.
The recent executive order (June 2018) ending new child separation from their families is a positive step. However, we are troubled by the current administration’s calls to suspend due process and ongoing falsehoods regarding the character of the immigrants detained. We call on the Administration and the Justice Department to end the “zero tolerance” policy and for Congress to pass a fair, humane, and comprehensive immigration policy. We must remember: “We are All-One or None!”
Dr. Bronner’s believes no human being is illegal. To support the reunification of children with their parents and provide ongoing legal support to separated families, Dr. Bronner’s is donating $10,000 to RAICES, a non-profit group that provides legal services to immigrants and refugees. We have also contributed $50,000 this year to Alliance San Diego, which promotes policies and solutions that improve the quality of life in border communities and advocates for immigrant equality.
