Dr. Bronner’s Supports UK Charity Emmaus and Awareness of People Experiencing Homelessness This Winter Season

Ethical Natural Brand of Soap & Local Distributor Support Emmaus Brighton and Hove and its 52 companions through percentage of UK sales

October 10, 2022

LONDON, UK – Each year, Dr. Bronner’s donates around 40% of its profits by selecting more than 300 organisations around the world to financially support. Through the All-One International Initiative, Dr. Bronner’s global philanthropy program, the company has a long-standing relationship with the Brighton- and Hove-based charity Emmaus as part of All-One UK, the local chapter of the program. As Emmaus supports people experiencing homelessness, Dr. Bronner’s and its UK distributor, Healthy Sales Group, have made financial and product contributions since 2019 to Emmaus made possible through a percentage of Dr. Bronner’s UK sales. This World Homeless Day, recognized on October 10, Dr. Bronner’s also gifted its bestselling Hand Hygiene Sprays to Emmaus’ current 52 companions, a practical item to help protect companions from colds and viruses this winter as germs and illness are more prevalent. The all-natural formula is effective against germs and an excellent option for cleanliness on-the-go when clean, running water isn’t always readily available – a privilege not everyone has, including people experiencing homelessness.

Mike Bronner, President of Dr. Bronner’s saysUnder our All-One International Initiative, it is Dr. Bronner’s mission to partner with organisations making real change around the world. We’re proud to support the work of Emmaus Brighton and Hove, who make a huge difference toward ending homelessness, not just on World Homeless Day, but all year round. We admire how Emmaus serves everyone that walks through their doors, and is dedicated to providing a comfortable refuge while giving their companions the tools they need to build themselves back up.”

Information on Emmaus

Emmaus Brighton & Hove has been supporting people experiencing homelessness in the Brighton and Hove area for 25 years, providing accommodation, training and support. It offers up to 57 people who have experienced homelessness a place to call home for as long as they need it, as well as providing meaningful work in its social enterprises. The charity is based out of its historic site in Portslade and welcomes visitors to its charity superstore on site Tuesday – Saturday.

Government figures released in August estimated that homelessness increased by around 11% in just three months, and with the cost of living continuing to rise in coming months it is anticipated that this figure will continue to rise significantly. There are many reasons that someone might find themselves homeless, and although it is increasingly common, there is still a lot of misinformation and stigma surrounding it.

Seamus, the Deputy Retail Manager at Emmaus Brighton and Hove said: “I was “working homeless”, so although I had a job, I was homeless. This is happening more and more to people, and it never used to happen, where people who have jobs become homeless because the amount of money they were receiving from wages is not covering the rent. There are lots of misconceptions around homelessness. People can get into financial difficulty, they can get ill, they can lose their jobs – there are many reasons.”

Dr Bronner’s All-One International Initiative

Dr. Bronner’s supports Emmaus as part of its All-One International Initiative, an umbrella initiative with chapters around the world to ensure that localised mission-aligned brand activism is a major priority for Dr. Bronner’s and the markets the company sells in around the world. Through this initiative, at a minimum, 1% of sales to Dr. Bronner’s participating international markets are donated to local efforts in support of social justice, environmental sustainability, and animal advocacy.

When consumers buy a product from Dr. Bronner’s, they are also supporting four organisations in the UK. Dr. Bronner’s has always been an activist company, dating back to the 1950s when Emanuel Bronner was calling on the human race to unite while selling his peppermint castile soap. Carrying forward that same activist spirit, the Dr. Bronner’s mission is to continue to use the company today to fight for and financially support causes they believe in.

Fair Trade

Since 2008 Dr. Bronner’s has been certified Fair Trade for all major raw materials (representing over 95% of annual agricultural volume) by the respected Swiss Certifier IMO. Shifting supply chains to use certified Fair Trade ingredients makes a big difference in the lives of several thousand farmers and workers —and is money well spent. Along with their families and communities, farmers and workers benefit from fair prices, living wages and funding for local development projects.

Certified Under the USDA National Organic Program

Organic Integrity in body care means that the main ingredients as well as secondary ingredients in an organic labeled or branded product are certified organic, produced in compliance with the National Organic Program. Dr. Bronner’s products are certified to the USDA National Organic Program, which consumers trust to ensure the organic integrity of organically labeled products.

No Animal Testing and Vegan

Dr. Bronner’s qualifies for the rabbit and stars logo of the Coalition for Consumer information on Cosmetics (CCIC). This logo certifies that the product and its ingredients are not tested on animals. The CCIC, a coalition of animal rights organizations, requires independent audit for confirmation. Dr. Bronner’s Castile Liquid and Bar Soaps do not contain animal products. Dr. Bronner’s has also obtained vegan certification from Vegan Action for all offerings that contain no animal-derived ingredients (this excludes lip and body balms), and the company is registered with the Vegan Society in the U.K. Vegetarian and animal welfare advocacy are a core focus of Dr. Bronner’s activism efforts.
