Dr. Bronner’s at Natural Products Virtual Expo West 2021: Company Announces New Magic All-One Chocolate, Presents Panel on Regenerative Organic Chocolate

Magic All-One Chocolate Available at Retailers Nationwide in Summer 2021

May 20, 2021

VISTA, CA – Dr. Bronner’s, the family-owned maker of the top-selling natural brand of soap in North America, will introduce a new line of organic, fair trade, and vegan chocolate in Summer of 2021. This pioneering natural product brand of over seventy-years is producing luscious bars with chunky bites and smooth rich and decadent fillings, based in 70% dark chocolate from cocoa beans grown using regenerative organic practices and sweetened with lower-glycemic coconut sugar. Magic All-One Chocolate is on track to become Regenerative Organic Certified in 2022, and with this regenerative organic and fair trade cocoa supply chain the company seeks to demonstrate that chocolate can truly be a transformative product that uplifts both body and soul, as well as mitigate climate change and support small-scale farmers globally. To further illuminate how Dr. Bronner’s Magic All-One Chocolate is a vehicle for addressing and providing solutions to the ecological and social harm prevalent in the conventional chocolate industry, the company will host a virtual educational seminar Monday, May 24th, which is free to attend for all Expo West attendees and will conclude with a live Q&A discussion.

Dr. Bronner’s Journey to Regenerative Organic Chocolate

Monday, May 24th | Natural Products Virtual Expo West

1:0opm – 2:00pm Pacific

Panelists:

Errol Schweizer, natural products industry veteran, will moderate this discussion that reveals why Dr. Bronner’s is entering the chocolate space, and how their unique supply chain played an integral role in this decision. Errol joins this panel with over twenty-five years of experience in food policy and fair labor systems; his questions will address everything from the product’s flavors and ingredients to the complexity of the cocoa industry.

Executive Director and Co-Founder of Fair World Project, Dana Geffner, will lay the baseline for this panel with her deep expertise in cocoa and the complex global conflicts that surround it. Dana has worked for over two decades on advancing socially-just food systems with small-scale farmers and global fair trade policy.

Dr. Bronner’s Vice President of Special Operations, Gero Leson, joins this panel with his unique story of shifting the company’s supply chain to organic, fair trade, and now regenerative organic ingredients. It was Gero’s work with Dr. Bronner’s sister company, Serendipalm, that opened the door to launching the new line of Dr. Bronner’s Magic All-One Chocolate. Learn more about this in Gero’s new book Honor Thy Label.

Serendipalm’s Managing Director, Safianu Moro, oversees the production of organic and fair trade cocoa beans used in Dr. Bronner’s Magic All-One Chocolate. Since joining the company in 2010, Safianu has led the development of an increasingly diverse range of crops produced in mixed agroforestry fields in Ghana. He will speak to the company’s environmentally responsible farming practices, and their immersion in the social and ecological development of the area.

Founder of Aliet Green, Lastiana Yuliandari, joins the panel with her expertise on sourcing the coconut sugar used in Dr. Bronner’s Magic All-One Chocolate. Lastiana will introduce her story with the alternative sweetener, and why Aliet Green was formed. She will describe the company’s equitable approach to coconut sugar production and how her farmers and community benefit from this work.

Dr. Bronner’s new Magic All-One Chocolate is a direct result of the company’s work to partner with farmers to improve the health and productivity of existing palm and cocoa trees in eastern Ghana through dynamic agroforestry. Dynamic agroforestry is a farming practice based on the integration of complementary trees and other crops that creates biodiversity, improves yields and income streams, and avoids the use of toxic chemicals by replicating the way plant species naturally support each other in a healthy tropical forest.

“The true cost of chocolate production has been externalized and paid by cocoa-producing communities in the service of profit for a few at the expense of many—leading to wide-spread ecological destruction, climate instability, poverty, worker exploitation, child labor, and even slavery,” said Gero Leson, Vice President of Special Operations and author of the newly released book Honor Thy Label, on Dr. Bronner’s ethical supply chain. “We want to model a move away from extractive capitalism to a truly constructive model. This thinking is at the foundation of Dr. Bronner’s decision to bring our magic chocolate to market.”

The chocolate trade has a well-documented history of causing social and environmental damage. The industry is built on destructive industrial farming practices and the extensive use of pesticides which result in low cocoa yields and low wages for farmers; labor exploitation and environmental destruction are rampant in cocoa production regions. Dr. Bronner’s new line of magic chocolate is a vehicle for the company to spread delicious chocolate while addressing ecological and social harm in the chocolate industry by modeling better practices in the sourcing and production of Dr. Bronner’s Magic All-One Chocolate.

“Our recipe is simple: perfectly balanced delicious ingredients sourced from fairly paid farmers implementing regenerative organic practices, that fulfill chocolate’s promise as an expression of love, elevating it to be the pure and ethical indulgence it is meant to be,” said Michael Bronner, President of Dr. Bronner’s.

Born from the company’s industry-leading socially and environmentally responsible supply chain and developed with the expertise of world-class Swiss chocolatiers and industry experts—this is a chocolate experience like no other—from the brand that is best known for making soap like no other. Dr. Bronner’s Magic All-One Chocolate is the ultimate expression of ethical business, activist compassion, and deep love for the planet. Flavors include: Salted Dark Chocolate; Roasted Whole Hazelnuts; Crunchy Hazelnut Butter; Salted Whole Almonds; Salted Almond Butter; and Smooth Coconut Praline.

“When we learned that many of the 800 farmers who supply our Regenerative Organic Certified Serendipalm project in Ghana also grew cocoa, it was a perfect opportunity to grow our partnership with fair trade farmers by developing these cocoa beans and other ingredients—all sourced to the highest standards possible—into a rich, delicious dark chocolate that elevates soil and community health, as well as quality of life for everyone in the supply chain,” said David Bronner, Cosmic Engagement Officer of Dr. Bronner’s. “Dr. Bronner’s is making magic through regenerative organic agriculture and its many benefits: dynamic agroforestry, biodiversity, soil fertility, better livelihoods for farmers, and delicious, rich, dark chocolate!”
